The Concerto was commissioned by the Enid Symphony Orchestra (Oklahoma). John performed the piano solo part in the premiere performances on February 9 & 10, 2003. Both musicians and audience received the Concerto with enthusiastic praise. Critical comment noted the work's "great audience appeal... extraordinary range of expression" and "the haunting melodies of the second movement." The Concerto was made possible by the support of local sponsors and the Oklahoma Arts Council. It was funded in part by the Composer Assistance Program of the American Music Center.
